Academic Engagement & Preparedness

ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT

In an online course such as this one, academic engagement is the equivalent of attendance in an in-person course and is defined as qualified academic events.

Failure to complete a Qualified Academic Event in an online course is the equivalent of an “absence” in an in-person class.

In extenuating circumstances, a student may arrange with the instructor to make up academic engagement that was not completed on time.

A Qualified Academic Event is defined as:

  • Submission of an academic assignment
  • Examination, interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instruction
  • Study group assigned by the school
  • Participation in online discussions about academic affairs
  • Initiation of contact with the instructor to ask a question about an academic subject

Students who have not submitted at least one qualified academic event during the first two weeks of the term will be administratively withdrawn. Students who have been administratively withdrawn from a class must repeat the course to receive credit.

PREPAREDNESS

Prior to the Live Session, students must complete the required reading, watch the video lectures, and prepare responses to any indicated questions. Students must also watch and/or read all instructor announcements. Otherwise, the remaining assignments for each week will generally be due after the Live Session takes place. Please refer to the Week-by-Week section of the syllabus for the exact assignment due dates. Content from prior weeks may be addressed during Live Sessions.

Each student must be prepared at each Live Session to participate meaningfully in class discussions. Students will be called upon at random and are expected to contribute to the discussion. Not being prepared in a Live Session will result in the student not receiving assignment credit.

The instructor has the authority to impose sanctions against any student who exhibits a pattern of unpreparedness in class. These sanctions include requiring the student to leave a Live Session. In such a case, the student will not receive the assignment credit for the time absent from class.
